Abstract

In this chapter, we will mainly draw on UK-based examples of female genital mutilation (FGM) research and practice as this is where we are based and so are most familiar. We anticipate that the knowledge and principles of good practice gained from engaging with the information below will be transferable to a range of different settings. Providing a safe space where those affected by FGM can be heard is key, whatever your role and wherever you are based. It is however important to recognise that there can be local, national and international variation in FGM legislation,
policy and guidelines and so you will need to familiarise yourself with these in the place where you are working.
