Abstract
A major consideration among coaches, teachers, and others significant to the sporting experience is the role of sport as a vehicle to promote young performers’ optimal social and psychological functioning. For many years, researchers as well as practitioners have mused on what personal and social factors facilitate versus forestall the promotion of adaptive behaviours, thoughts and emotions among young athletes. Two theoretical constructs that researchers have utilised in attempting to answer these questions are motivation and values. In the sport context, the study of the determinants and consequences of motivation has been a major research focus over the past four decades. However, in comparison, the topic of values has received scant attention in the sport literature. As a result, little is known regarding the interplay between values and motivation in this domain.
