Abstract
Women diagnosed with and treated for a gynaecological cancer encounter physical, psychosocial, emotional, and sexual needs which can have a lasting impact on their overall quality of life. Very often, these needs remain unmet owing to patient, healthcare professional or logistical factors. Holistic needs assessment is necessary to better identify the expressed needs of cancer patients and their carers and empower them to cope with a new cancer diagnosis and adapt to the life changes this entails. In this chapter, we will consider how the global needs of women living with and beyond cancer evolve along the cancer journey; at diagnosis, during treatment, in remission, at relapse, during palliation and at the end of their lives, why these needs are sometimes not being fulfilled and how care providers can support women to access the help and support they require. We will also explore how treatment for cancers of the female genital tract can affect on the cancer survivor’s sexuality and psychosexual wellbeing.
