Abstract

Electron beam (EB) surface melting and subsequent tempering have been carried out on a novel Ti-8.5Si alloy. The hardening response, hardening mechanisms and the tempering behaviour of the electron beam surface melted Ti-8.5Si alloy have been investigated using optical microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis. It was found that the novel Ti-8.5Si alloy can be successfully surface hardened by electron beam surface melting. This surface hardening effect can be attributed to both micro structural refinement and solid solution hardening following EB surface melting. The EB surface melted Ti-8.5Si alloy exhibits high resistance to tempering.
