Geography matters: Geographical lessons from the COVID Pandemic

Research output: Non-textual form › Digital or Visual Products

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic was a global event, but the long-term impacts have been far more geographically uneven.

In this video, we investigate how geography helps explain the uneven long-term impacts of COVID across different regions of the UK. From health outcomes to economic inactivity, we explore how local conditions—such as industry type, age demographics, and digital connectivity—shape people’s ability to work, recover, and adapt.

We explore:

• How and why the same pandemic affected UK regions differently
• The link between economic sectors (primary, secondary, tertiary, quaternary) and vulnerability to disruption
• How studying the human regional geography helps decision-makers to create geographically smart policies that reflect the different needs of different regions
• How spatial thinking helps us understand and better cope with local challenges resulting from global connectivity and global events.
