Abstract

This editorial outlines the possible direction for early research careers. It lays out the landscape so that early career researchers may make some conscious devisions as they mark out their own territory in taking nursing research forward. The analysis of nursing results will continue, but the overall summary from the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) panels emphasised that the strongest submissions (not just in nursing): took a programmatic approach; demonstrated interdisciplinarity; and had established mechanisms for supporting early career researchers.
