Abstract
The article dissects the chronological structure of the "Chronicle" of Theophanes the Confessor, our main source for the history of Byzantium in the 7th and 8th centuries. Through an analysis of the working methods of Theophanes it allows to better assess his chronology, which has too often been taken by modern historians at face value.
