N2 - Railways are the backbone of modern economies and greener societies. Its multi- scale values create opportunities and potential across value chains. Digitalisation of railway systems can further improve availability, automation, connectivity, resilience, safety, and sustainability in railways. Despite the fact that rail digitalization has been initiated for over two decades, the depth and scale of its applications are relatively limited to rail traffic simulations. Therefore, it is necessary to further expand and enrich digital solutions to many challenges posed by increased operational demands, transition to net zero railways, and uncertainties and risks stemming from extreme events due to natural and man-made disasters. This book will highlight new research outcomes with respect to digital railway infrastructures capable of tackling various challenges and offering new creative solutions to the industry. I am very pleased that these challenges have been emphasised within the aim and scope of this new book. The research collaboration and knowledge body in this area can be systemically used to timely address such high-risk and high-impact issues of which the current state of practice is still insufficient. In fact, digitalisation will provide rail transportation an unprecedented boost. Its applications offer greater flexibility, effectiveness, and efficiency and significantly advance the interconnected railway and transportation systems. With the benefits of the internet of things (IoT), smartphones, drones, connected digital twins, data science, and advanced sensing technologies, rail digitalisation can be fully realised to create new values for all stakeholders, and importantly our rail passengers. This book gathers state-of-the-art research outcomes related to digital transformation projects currently improving the safety, reliability, and functionality of rail infrastructure systems worldwide. This book is a state-of-the-art collection of a new body of knowledge focused on key research themes to improve insights into digital railway infrastructures. The content of this book will significantly benefit practicing engineers, researchers, and graduate students, who will embark on the next generation of digital future.
