Abstract

Recently, some psychological studies have suggested that certain games can 'inoculate' us against tactics used to spread misinformation and conspiracy theories. In this paper, we present a new game called Fake Plots, which has been developed with two main objectives. First, to enhance public understanding of how conspiracy theories develop and spread, and second, to help people recognize both the main characteristics of social media posts that disseminate misinformation and the main strategies used to promote conspiracy theories. Fake Plots is based on the experience of pre-existing games but has some features that make it particularly suitable for use in the classroom and in an exhibition context: it is a playful game that allows players to interact and compete with each other.
