Expanding the Field: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly when it comes to Social Media

Abstract

In a world that is becoming increasingly digital, academics often turn to the likes of Facebook and Twitter to showcase their work. In fact, we are often encouraged to use these platforms. It can therefore be argued that the field today goes beyond traditional physical location to encompass the online world. Though anyone can become subjected to online abuse, it is apparent that women are subjected to a unique form of abuse in which patriarchal attitudes are now mirrored in an online context. This presentation looks at rethinking what we consider to be the field when it comes to our research.
