Enhancing and transforming fieldwork using digital tools

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Rapid advances in digital technology over recent years have, in some ways, transformed the ways in which we do fieldwork. The availability of mobile devices has meant that we can now utilise a variety of tools to enhance fieldwork through activities such as video recording, on-site data collection, sharing and analysis, and mapping. Virtual environments have also been used to prepare students for fieldwork and improve accessibility for all students. Recent developments in machine learning provide scope for further enhancements, modifications and even the redefinition of fieldwork. In this chapter, we explore the ways in which digital technology has been used to enhance fieldwork learning and student engagement and improve inclusivity. We consider the benefits and disadvantages posed by the use of digital tools together with practical hints and tips to avoid any pitfalls.
