Electric Mobility in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: Preparedness from the Consumer Point of View

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contribution

Abstract

Electric Vehicles (EV s) are considered as an alternative to conventional vehicles with an aim of lowering transportation induced environmental pollution. However, the adoption of EVs has been hindered by several barriers including insufficient charging infrastructure, high purchasing cost, range anxiety, and consumer resistance, among others. Over the years, High-Income Countries (HICs) have been adopting EVs at various capacities. However, this is not the case in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) as only a few countries in this category have started the process of replacing conventional vehicles with EVs. This paper considers how prepared LMICs are for the adoption of EVs based on consumer research that identifies barriers and adoption methods. It was found that there is a scarcity of studies in this area and that academics, industry, and policymakers should pay more attention to this subject to avoid failures in EV adoption in these nations.
