Abstract

An advanced polycrystalline nickel superalloy with different grain size and precipitates distribution was tested under dwell fatigue loading at elevated temperatures. Different dwell times at peak load were examined to investigate the effect of dwell time on the crack growth rates as well as crack growth mechanism. A transition of crack growth mechanism from cyclic-dependent, transgranular fatigue crack growth to time-dependent, intergranular crack growth was found to associate with the dwell time at peak load. The dwell time needed for such a transition was also found to be depend on the microstructure of the material.
