Developing parallel MSc / Degree Apprenticeship pathways in Geotechnical Engineering

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceeding › Conference contribution

Abstract

As global infrastructure projects expand, the demand for geotechnical engineers continues to rise. A Master’s (MSc) degree provides specialised knowledge, facilitating career progression in geotechnical engineering. With the introduction of Level 7 Degree Apprenticeships (DAs) in the UK, growing evidence suggests this pathway offers a viable alternative to traditional MSc programmes, driven by increasing industry demand. This paper examines the redevelopment of an existing MSc into parallel MSc/Level 7 DA programmes, establishing a robust UK standard through industry-academia collaboration. The programmes will produce graduates with core competencies in knowledge, skills, and behaviours aligned with the industry’s requirements, better preparing them for local and global challenges. A comprehensive review of module delivery, assessment, and integration led to significant improvements in content delivery and a more interactive learning environment. The revised structure challenges students with real-world geotechnical scenarios while fostering stronger industry partnerships that drive ongoing innovation and flexibility. Key enhancements include greater use of ICT tools, industry-driven curriculum design, and flexible learning approaches. This approach ensures that graduates are equipped with practical skills and ready to contribute effectively from day one. The success of the MSc/DA programmes demonstrates the importance of continuous collaboration between
academia and industry in shaping future geotechnical professionals. These changes have been widely embraced by students and employers, reinforcing the value of integrating academic rigour with hands on experience.
