Deformation twinning activation of TI-6AL-4V under different loading conditions

Ti-6Al-4V is the most widespread of titanium alloys and finds use in the aerospace industry in the manufacture of fan blades in jet turbine engines. As such, an understanding of its response to impact loading such as bird strike and foreign object damage is of great importance. In this research, Ti-6Al-4V has been deformed by means of one-dimensional plate impact to stresses of 5 GPa and 10 GPa. The deformation of Ti-6Al-4V with a large colony size has also been studied using a Charpy impact tester with impact energy varying from 10 J to 300 J at both liquid nitrogen temperature and room temperature. The deformation microstructure has been observed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) in all specimens tested. In addition to TEM observations, the nature of twinning and dislocation slip and their roles in the deformation will be discussed vis-à-vis the literature on the plastic deformation of the alloy.
