This article briefly explores the overall shape and development of Critical Race Theory (CRT) in the field of Education Studies. Among the key concepts that we discuss are the nature of racism in contemporary education; how notions such as colour-blindness and meritocracy operate to defend the racist status quo; intersectionality; and interest convergence. The paper argues that CRT offers a dynamic and incisive lens on racial and ethnic conflicts and inequity that is increasingly important, albeit one that presents a direct and radical challenge to mainstream European assumptions about race, ethnicity and power in politics and education.
