Constructive Conflicts in the Light of Different Types of Trust in Strategic Alliances

Research output: Contribution to journalConference articlepeer-review

Abstract

On the one hand, conflicts are traditionally seen as leading to destructive (negative) outcomes. On the other hand, few studies in the literature have pointed out constructive (positive) elements of conflict. Different types of trust may to some extent affect the progression towards positive or negative outcomes. The aim of this study is to investigate inter-organisational conflicts in the light of different types of trust. A better understanding of trust in this context should derive both theoretical and practical implications. Well-managed conflicts can enhance trust-building between partners (prospective or current), supporting over time alliance formation and stability. Conflict can be changed from accustomed negative perceptions to more positive approaches. In our typology, we explore the link of each procedure with calculative trust, cognitive trust, and the transition between calculative and cognitive trust. Future research directions are suggested.
