Abstract

The C-14 + alpha breakup of O-18 has been studied at energies of E-beam = 136 MeV and 148.5 MeV, using a 200 mu g cm(-2) thick Be target. Several states belonging to the proposed octupole deformed band, previously associated with the 8.04 MeV, l(-) and 8.22 MeV, 2(+) states, have been populated through inelastic excitation. A candidate for the 7(-) member was not found, providing evidence that the negative parity component of the band terminates at the 5(-) member. This is shown to be consistent with the Nilsson description of the systematics in the O-16, O-18 and Ne-20 nuclei. In addition, several states at E-x > 13 MeV in O-18 have been measured to alpha -decay for the first time. The a-transfer reactions Be-9(O-18, C-12 Be-10)He-5, Be-9(O-18, C-13 Be-9)He-5 and Be-9(O-18, O-11 He-4)He-5 were also measured; however, little or no evidence for the population of states in Ne-22 was found.
