Abstract

The paper examines the contribution of the publications by the British antiquarian Charles Roach Smith to knowledge of two sets of late Roman defences in France, Dax (Landes) and Larcay (Indre-et-Loire), and his participation in the 'affaire' of the demolition of the walls of Dax. His illustrations preserve evidence otherwise unrecorded.
