Abstract

Objective: The purpose of these studies was to record changes in pH over a 24-h period following restorative proctocolectomy and ileo-anal anastomosis for familial adenomatous polyposis or ulcerative colitis. Design: A probe was placed in the ileal pouch to continuously record pH and to study the impact of meals, sleep, defaecation and functional outcome on pH. Methods: pH was measured using a radiotelematory capsule comprising a transducer battery and radiotransmitter. Signals were detected by ariels and recorded on to a portable recorder. Results: There was wide fluctuation in pH over 24h. pH rose significantly after each episode of defaecation (P
