Building a specialised audiovisual corpus

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

This chapter explains what audiovisual corpora are, what distinguishes them from monomodal corpora and the different purposes for which audiovisual corpora may be built or interrogated. The chapter then gives an overview of the process of building an audiovisual corpus and the main considerations involved, from initial conception, through project design to data collection, corpus processing and finally to the development of tools and interfaces for exploitation. A number of projects, resources and tools are referred to for illustration. The chapter concludes with a brief discussion of how audiovisual corpus resources and technologies are likely to develop in the coming years.
