Abstract
The magnitude of the diffracted field in the shadow regions is very sensitive to the choice of the canonical obstacle used to simulate the building edge feature. The need to consider transmitted fields in ray-optics methods when predicting fields in shadow regions implies a degree of information not available in topographic databases. This places a fundamental limitation on the ability of radio planning tools to reliably predict fields in shadow regions, regardless of the sophistication of the electromagnetic model.
