Abstract

Application of composite materials in off shore oil and gas industry is reviewed. Past reviews are
either outdated or limited to tubular structures. Research studies pertinent to application of composites
materials in tubular structures, down hole components, equipment and repair are discussed. Also research
on composites application in similar off shore environment, like marine engineering, is reviewed to identify
research areas of common benefits. Tubular structures like pipes and risers are found to attract majority of
the research attention for the application of composites in oil industry similarly fiber reinforced plastics had
been area of prime interest. Advances in composites materials like nano technology is rarely pursed to
understand their benefits in the off shore oil industry. There are very few basic studies on application of
composites in common equipment like pressure vessels and heat exchangers which provide huge opportunity
for innovative research and long term benefits for the industry. Off shore oil and gas industry has great
potential to drive economical research on innovative application o f composite materials for long term
benefits. This will be equally useful for industries in similar environment like off shore wind energy and
marine engineering sector.
