Abstract
This article offers a new chronology of the works of Maximus the Confessor, one of the most prominent Byzantine theologians, whose works are a crucial source for the crisis of Byzantium in the 7th century. The previous chronological framework established by Sherwood in 1952 is outdated because of the progress in our understanding of the monothelete controversy and, more generally, of the 7th century. This article offers a re-reading of Maximus' works in the light of the recent research, extracts historical hints from them, and aims at facilitating their use by the historians.
