Abstract

The Advanced RAdar Network (ADRAN) is a fully digital L-band testbed developed at the University of Birmingham for multistatic radar research and the evaluation of ultra-low phase-noise oscillators. The system provides element-level digitisation, flexible beamforming, and operation with a range of external reference sources, enabling controlled studies of coherence and oscillator performance across monostatic and bistatic geometries. Recent additions—a transportable transmitter and an SDR-based passive receiver—extend the available multistatic configurations. ADRAN therefore offers a versatile platform for developing synchronisation strategies, refining multistatic processing, and assessing how oscillator phase noise affects coherence and ultimately limits detection sensitivity in distributed radar systems.
