The acoustic correlation log appears to have considerable advantages when compared to the Doppler log. This is mainly because a single beam of acoustic energy is used which points straight down at the sea bed. The return echoes are expected to be much stronger than from the Doppler log because of the normal incidence of the acoustic beam with the sea bed. The acoustic beam widths may be fairly large, and therefore low frequencies are used with a consequent improvement in operating depth.
