Accident storytelling: a case study in synoptic learning, engagement and unintended learning outcomes using aircraft accidents

This practice paper will describe and reflect on the development of a new optional module, Air Safety Lessons Learnt, within a B/MEng in Aerospace Engineering. This module aimed to develop synoptic aerospace knowledge and skills via aircraft accident case studies delivered using a storytelling style. The main modes of evaluation were self-reflection of the module team, peer-feedback from academic poster assessors, and informal student reflections. The
module has run successfully once, generating useful reflections and areas for continuous improvement. The storytelling approach was well-suited for some learning outcomes, though may require some adaption to encourage students to draw synoptic knowledge from across their programme. The poster assessment scheme adopted was able to authentically assess individual performance in a group presentation successfully and practically and is recommended for wider consideration.
