Accepting PhD Students

PhD projects

The group is seeking motivated PhD students with a background in mechanical engineering, material science, physics, chemistry, or in a closely related field. Candidates with interests in (but not limited to) one or more of the following areas are encouraged to contact Dr Sun to discuss possible projects via email (y.sun.9@bham.ac.uk):
1) Material properties under high strain rate deformation.
2) Nanoporous materials, including MOFs, zeolites, and silica.
3) Nanofluidics and microfluidics.
4) Micromechanics and applications of nano-architected materials.
5) Energy absorption and protection against impact, vibration and blast.
6) Vehicle safety and traffic accidents.

Personal profile

Dr Yueting Sun received his Bachelor in Automotive Engineering and Bachelor in Economics from Tsinghua University in 2010, followed by a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Tsinghua University in 2015. He visited the University of California, San Diego from 2013 to 2014, and held the KC Wong Fellowship at the University of Oxford from 2016 to 2018. He moved from Oxford to Birmingham in Dec 2019 and became a Lecturer in Engineering.

Research interests

Dr Sun has a broad interest in the field of mechanics of materials. His group performs cross-disciplinary research to design materials and systems at the nano/micro-scale for unprecedented engineering performances. Recent research topics involve impact mechanics and energy conversion leveraging the nanofluidics in highly porous materials such as Metal-organic Frameworks (MOFs).
