Paul Newman's main areas of expertise are the strong nuclear force, the quark and gluon sub-structure of protons and nuclei and the behaviour of gluons at very high densities. His research spans the theme of:

Professor Newman is involved in various international collaborative projects including the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, where he is working primarily on collisions between ultra-high energy protons; the LHeC Project; and the H1 experiment at the HERA Collider.
