PhD projects

Jane Martin’s research is concerned with the relation between education and politics. Employing a biographical approach, Jane adopts existing feminist and historical models to explore the link with social movements, especially socialism and the women's movement, and the role of particular educator activists at particular points in history. Her publications includeWomen and the Politics of Schooling in Victorian and Edwardian England, winner of the History of Education Society Book Prize 2002 andMaking Socialists: Mary Bridges Adams and the Fight for Knowledge and Power 1855-1939(2010). Currently, Professor Martin is writing a biography of Caroline Benn.

Professor Martin is interested in supervising doctoral research in all her areas of interest.
