Biography

Dr. Jamal Umer is an accomplished researcher and educator with over a decade of experience in academia and research. He earned his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Loughborough University in 2020, following a prestigious EURHEO Master’s programme specialising in Chemical and Mechanical Engineering from KU Leuven, Belgium, and ULJ, Slovenia. His academic foundation was established with a BSc in Mechanical Engineering from UET Lahore, Pakistan, a leading institution in the field of engineering. Dr. Umer began his academic career at UET Lahore, where he served as Lecturer from 2009, Assistant Professor from 2012, and Associate Professor from 2022. During this time, he was recognised with the Best Teacher Award in 2023 for his dedication to creating a stimulating learning environment and delivering exceptional teaching.

In addition to his roles at UET Lahore, Dr. Umer has held key research positions in the UK. These include Research Assistant/Associate role at Loughborough University, where he contributed to cutting-edge studies in mechanical and material characterisation. He also served as a Teaching Assistant at Loughborough, supporting undergraduate and postgraduate courses in engineering. Dr. Jamal Umer worked on a short-term postdoctoral project in experimental horology at Manchester Metropolitan University, focusing on the development and characterisation of low-friction coatings for precision timekeeping mechanisms. This work expanded his expertise in tribology and surface engineering. Currently, he is a Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham, where he is leading research on experimental triboelectrification and precision measurement.

His research expertise encompasses tribology, rheology, triboelectrification, horology, and experimental characterisation at multiple scales. He has extensive experience in employing advanced techniques such as AFM, SEM, XPS, EDX, tribometers, indentation, UTM, rheometers, and magnetron sputtering to address challenges in surface engineering, material characterisation, and precision metrology.
