Research interests

Dr Asma El Howati is an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer in Oral Medicine at the University of Birmingham. Her research focuses on immune-mediated oral mucosal diseases, particularly oral lichen planus, with the aim of understanding disease mechanisms, identifying biomarkers and therapeutic targets, and improving patient outcomes.

She developed a three-dimensional tissue-engineered inflammatory oral mucosal disease model and is applying it to the pre-clinical evaluation of novel therapies and drug repurposing. Her broader research interests include oral immunology, tissue engineering, precision medicine, oral potentially malignant disorders, and oral cancer.
