Andrew Quinn has research interests in a number of fields of environmental fluid mechanics. Recent projects include WEATHER - Wind Early Alarm System for Terrestrial Transport Handling Evaluation of Risks, a groundbreaking EU project seeking to improve road safety through an understanding of the side-wind forces on large vehicles. This has complemented several studies of road and rail vehicle slipstreams and the effect on road/trackside objects undertaken for UK and international clients. He is also involved in a number of initiatives in the field of wind power, particularly the testing and improvement of micro-scale wind turbines. He has an interest in the study of vortex structure identification and other types of non-synoptic wind features, and their impacts on transport systems, structures and pollutant movement through the environment. This has led to several new projects evaluating the risk to vehicles in exposed locations and the potential for local recapture of pollution by vegetation.
