My PhD thesis title is:

Assessing the Representation and Role of Race in Children’s Picturebooks

It has become increasingly clear in recent years that children’s picturebooks have been and continue to be lacking in terms of racial equity and inclusion.  We know that the books accessed by children can work to challenge or enforce stereotypes, and the messages conveyed in illustrations can impact how children feel about themselves and others (Tayler and Price, 2016, p. 109). Children’s ideas and opinions are shaped by exposure to visual stimuli and early learning experiences, meaning that the power of children’s literature in promoting inclusion and equity in the next generation is of paramount importance.

Biography

I have a keen interest in how inclusion and representation can be improved in the children's publishing sector and through mediators such as libraries and schools. My thesis title is 'Assessing the Representation and Role of Racial Diversity in Children’s Picturebooks' and I am due to complete my PhD in English Literature at the University of Birmingham in August 2024.

I currently work as a freelance academic proofreader and copywriter, helping disadvantaged students and those who speak English as an Additional Language.
