The data consists of a large sample of spoken and written discourse chunks extracted from the BNC and annotated for the five main determinants of article use: Hearer Knowledge (present/absent), Specificity of Referent (present/absent), Grammatical Number (Singular/Plural), Countability (Countable/Noncountable), Elaboration (pre-modification/post-modification/both/neither), and Corpus (Spoken/Written).
