DescriptionThe academic Oliver Herford achieved something, if not impossible, then very unlikely: a new contribution to our understanding of the life and work of Henry James. His first book, Henry James’s Style of Retrospect: Late personal writings (Oxford), combines the various tools of the Jamesian – unremitting scholarship, adventurous biography and granular criticism – to show that the most ransacked body of work in early Modernist literature includes several memoirs and essays that display a “fully artistic non-fictional style”.
