DescriptionRecent advancements in medical treatments offer hope that one day we will have a cure for Alzheimer’s disease. However, the disease-modifying drugs are associated with serious side effects and are not widely available to all those who may need it. Alzheimer’s disease is also only 1 of over 100 types of dementia, therefore, a significant number of the population will not benefit from treatment. The management of lifestyle factors and access to support services remain a critical component of dementia care and can significantly improve quality of life for those affected.

In a thought leadership report published by Royal Voluntary Service (RVS) the shortage of support for people with a recent diagnosis of dementia is highlighted. In addition, recommendations are presented based on research using existing community groups on the beneficial impact access to support networks can have. Ultimately, change is needed to create a society that enables people to live well with dementia.
