The Double-Edged Sword of AI-Powered Public Discourse: Opportunities and Challenges for Inclusion

Activity: Academic and Industrial eventsGuest lecture or Invited talk

Description

In an era increasingly defined by division and polarization, emerging technologies present a promising solution: the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to foster digital dialogues aimed at enhancing mutual understanding and forging global consensus. Digital deliberation tools are increasingly playing a pivotal role in refining decision-making processes. A new wave of AI-powered applications is emerging, capable of gauging public sentiment on a vast scale. These tools not only assist citizens in policy decision-making, including during election periods, urban planning, and public debates on pressing media topics, but also endeavor to bridge the gap between differing viewpoints.

This Weizenbaum Fellow Talk delved into the parameters necessary for the creation of a new generation of AI-powered deliberation tools, exploring intrinsic obstacles and opportunities for digital forms of citizen engagement. The talk shared insights from digital dialogues carried out by the United Nations and highlight new trends in this field.

The scope of this talk transcends the basic facilitation of dialogue through AI; it aimed to deeply understand how to innovatively leverage AI algorithms to identify and align shared interests. This endeavor is not just about initiating conversations but about crafting a foundation for the growth of social communities and fostering a nuanced comprehension across diverse groups in both the virtual and physical domains.
