MPA Research Forum talk: The Augmented Soundwalk

Activity: Academic and Industrial eventsGuest lecture or Invited talk

Description

A soundwalk is an excursion in which the primary purpose is to listen to the environment. A participant will likely find that undertaking a soundwalk instigates a connection between themselves and the place they are exploring, allowing them to hear and consider their relationship to the environment. This presentation will begin by discussing traditional approaches to soundwalking and continue to focus on the recent developments that the Birmingham based organisation SOUNDkitchen have made in developing augmented soundwalks. These walks involve traditional exercises designed to draw attention to sonic features particular to the location but also extend the walker’s listening abilities, augmenting the natural hearing range through the use of audio technology.
