Migration and Gender Workshop

Activity: Academic and Industrial eventsConference, workshop or symposium

Description

Gender determines every part of the migration experience, from destination to degree of assimilation and integration in the labour market. It can propitiate or impede gender equality, alternatively offering new opportunities for women´s empowerment, but also creating different power dynamics that can discriminate against both female and male migrants. Bringing together an interdisciplinary group of scholars in the humanities and social sciences, this workshop seeks to generate a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between migration and gender. Speakers explore, in particular, the intersection of migration, generation and gender, the impact of migration on women’s self-image, as well as migrants’ socio-economic integration in countries of destination. It will also provide an insight into the cultural representation of this relationship. An information session on grant bidding also forms part of the workshop. We aim to establish a network of academics who share an interest in migration and gender studies.

This event is held under the auspices of the Word/Music/Image research group in the School of Modern Languages in the University of Birmingham.
