Description

In this talk, we dissect the prevailing notion that crime is the result of a few ‘bad apples’, and instead delve into the broader social and environmental factors that contribute to criminal behaviour. The key to crime prevention is a healthier community – and an understanding of how to foster it.

In this session, we will explore the power of community and individual wellbeing as key factors in preventing crime, shifting the focus from a few "bad apples" to a holistic approach that fosters safer and healthier communities.

We begin by dissecting the prevailing notion that crime is solely the result of a few individuals with criminal tendencies, and instead, delve into the broader social and environmental factors that contribute to criminal behaviour. By understanding the interconnectedness between community dynamics, individual wellbeing, and crime rates, attendees will gain valuable insights into the complex web of influences that shape community safety.

Through presenting our own research as well as that from other researchers in the field of criminology, we will highlight successful crime prevention initiatives that prioritize community engagement and wellbeing. Participants will discover inspiring examples of how communities have come together to address the root causes of crime, nurture social connections, and promote overall wellbeing.
